How to choose 3D printer filament for everyday FDM printing

Start with the print environment

Desktop FDM printing usually starts with PLA because it is easy to run, widely compatible, and suitable for prototypes, visual models, and hobby projects. PETG becomes more useful when the part needs better toughness or heat resistance.

Match material to the job

Use PLA filament for display parts and rapid iteration, PETG filament for durable daily-use prints, and carbon-fiber reinforced filament when stiffness and a more technical finish matter. Cleaning filament belongs in the maintenance kit, not the project bin.
